The health status of women in Pakistan

(Unveiling the facts on International Mother’s Day)

Every day, more than 1,000 women die from problems related to bearing children. Every minute, the loss of a mother shatters a family and threatens the well-being of surviving children. Evidence shows that infants whose mothers die are more likely to die before reaching their second birthday than infants whose mothers survive. And for every woman who dies, 20 or more experience serious complications. The tragedy is that almost all of these deaths – an estimated 529,000 a year – are preventable; yet while most other health indicators have improved in the developing world over the last decades, maternal mortality and morbidity for more details please click

Hepatitis hits Pakistan

(Hepatitis Day May 19, 2010)

(Every 10th person in Pakistan suffering form Hepatitis.)

Pakistan Medical Association estimated that 15.6% of the population carries the virus of Hepatitis. However due to absence of properly maintained statistics the estimates of the disease’s prevalence vary. The incredible disease has hit the country so hard that Pakistanis are heading to laboratories for testing and about 3 million who visited public sector hospitals per year have hepatitis B or C. While some other statistics explain that 14 million people suffering from the hepatitis epidemic in the country, out of which 8.8 million people are suffering from hepatitis C, while 5.6 million are infected with hepatitis B. The another picture of the deadly disease is some five million children, born in Pakistan every year face fatal health risks due to the failure of the government to include hepatitis B vaccine in to the national immunization program as per recommended by8 the World Health Organization. Failure of the government to include Hepatitis B in immunization program and the absence of creating the public awareness that the situation demands, is putting million of newborns at high risk. This is more fearful as Pakistan already has a high infant mortality rate of 88 per thousand and under 5 mortality rate is even higher as 123 per 1000.

Despite of all the situation Pakistani government is not doing worthwhile to reduce the alarming statistics. Even this year the budget allocation in this regard is humorous. In budget 2010-2011 an amount of only 8 lac have been allocated for hepatitis control program. This shows that our government is not taking this alarming situation seriously. The only option to keep disease away is prevention, but no press conferences, walks or educational activities organized at government level. Silence about the causes of hepatitis could be deadly. Another challenge is that the government has not fully implemented the Safe Blood Transformation Ordinance, introduced in 2002.

A lot of work is required to be done to control the disease:

  • Need to include hepatitis B vaccination into national immunization program.

  •  Clean drinking water facility can help to minimize situation.

  • Sterilized equipment usage policy should be implemented strictly.

  • Public sector hospitals should be equipped with modern facilities to provide adequate treatment to patients suffering from the disease.

  •  Mass level awareness campaign should be launched through media and civil society.

  • Sufficient funds should be allocated to combat the disease.

Violence Rules………..Victims suffer in silence!!!

Acids attacks are common in Pakistan which is not only monstrous but vicious and damaging form of violence. The overwhelming majority of the victims are women and, and many are below 18 years of age. The victims are attacked for many reasons, quite often by a jealous spouse or someone in their immediate family, In some cases it is because a young girl or woman has refused the sexual advances of a male or either she or her parent have rejected a marriage proposal. Most recently, however there have been acid attacks on children, older women and also men. These attacks are often the result of family and land disputes, dowry demand or more simply a desire for revenge.Even though a growing public outcry it remains easy to purchase the deadly acids . Despite the viciousness of these attacks, many go unreported and accurate statistics on acid attacks are hard to find. A conservative estimate of acid attacks in Pakistan is 150 attacks in a year however human rights activists believe that only 30% cases are reported. In Southern Punjab the situation is also very serious the total No of cases happened as recorded by Awaz CDS Database unit are 18 in past six months of year 2010

While the situation of acid attacks in the last five year reported cases only in Southern Punjab is as under:

Year

2005

2006

2007

2008

2009

2010

Cases

Most of the time the victim lose life but if the victim survives the effects of acid attacks are life changing. Acid burns through eyes, skin tissues, and bone. They are physically and psychologically destroyed, and they just pass the ruined lives. The prevalence of the acid attacks is a danger to the whole nation. In societies where the violence rules, violence will increase and spread beyond those boundaries. If countries cannot offer the women security they cannot built a strong generation. The minds are transformed with by frustration and anger which lead violence to rule.
